Your tasks during the game
There is a lot of information on this platform: don't get "killed by information": so what to do first? Read all of the tasks underneath and following the steps is handy. You can click on any blue link for more information on any page. Don't start immediately doing so, you might get lost ;-).
First get grip on the simulation± look around and plan ahead! Good luck!
Participating in the game means doing the next tasks:
A. During January 2013 (before 4th February; the game week) the next tasks must have been finished
You will receive information from your coaches on:
> your username and password for the platform to edit your teampage
> your teammembers
> secret link to your secure section where you input your decisions and can see your results
With this information you can work on your first four tasks.
- Task 1: Meet with your teammembers
Make a planning on meetings with your team in the weeks before the game is played, to do preparations and make plans for who is going to do what during week 6. In this gameweek (week 6) all teammembers must be available all of the time.
- Task 2: Study E-manual
Go to the top right hand side of this page screen at "My Preferences" and choose E-mail options. Only change the e-mail address in the e-mail address of one of your team members. Do not change the password or anything else.
Study the E-manual: here you will find what you need to read before taking any action. Look around a bit in the platform, so that you get a grip on what to find here and how it works. All teammembers can login using the same username± multiple users at the same time with the same login name is no problem. For just reading the content of this platform you don't need to login at all, by the way (only if you want to edit).
- Task 3: First actions
After reading, discuss your strategic plans with regard to the hotel and come to a conclusion. First have a look look at the example page: page 02DE User example team. Then start filling out on your own team page the first section which is called
Your Hotel basics: preparations.
This means a new name for your hotel, a new logo plus picture, a new slogan, a new management picture. Be sure only to work on your OWN team page!
Think of a new strategy on how to manage the hotel: as in reality, you can change some things during the game, but not into a complete different strategy. There is an extended Help, and there is also some Help:Video learning available (not totally ready yet).
Check the page Explaining secure section with the secret link for access that you've received. This is the section were your company-decisions and -results will be organized. Please fill out your hotel name here and fill out some decisions to get a feeling for things. You can change your decisions until the deadline of each year.
- Task 4: Prepare Trade Fair
In the game-week, your hotel will be presenting itself on a Trade Fair. So, before his week think this over and prepare this Trade Fair: check this page for more information. This is an important meeting, which influences your success in the game.
This offers you the opportunity to present your (new ideas on the) hotel. Be creative, and have a look on the pictures of Trade Fairs of other competitions. All team-members must participate on the Trade Fair.
To make your appearance on the Trade fair as useful as possible, your preparations on your team page (task 3) must be ready (new, logo, slogan, introduction of new management.
B. Tasks during the game week 04 February - 08 February
All the sessions during the game-week are very useful and compulsory (and often fun, of course).
- Task 5: Tuesday 5 February (year 01) - Day of Creativity
On this first day your team will demonstrate its creativity and thereby present the new hotel in a more promising strategic direction, as well as distinguish your hotel from competitors.

> 11.00 - 15.00 Preparations for Trade Fair, post offer prices, adjust team page etc.
> 15.00 Deadline for decisions and explanations in D&E-form for year 01: read the Explaining secure section and use your secret link. Hand in a printed D&E-form at your coach.
> 15.30 - 17.00 Participation in Trade Fair and presentation of your own stand ( Task 1, 1a)
> 17.30 Hand in printed documentation of the rest of Task 1 (Strategic Analysis, 1b. & 1c.; 1 page each).
- Task 6: Wednesday 6 February (year 02) - Day of Calculations
Analyse the results, the operational costs made and the key performance indicators (KPI's) for your hotel. On this day, focus on those calculations a manager often has to make. The "language of financials is key" in the hotel sector. Further, linking these to benchmarks is crucial to profitability. After receiving your first results (on year 01) you need to study it, in order to decide on how to react in the next round.

> 17.00 Hand in printed version of the analysis of the results at your coach (Task 2; max. 4 pp.).
- Task 7: Thursday 7 February (year 03) - Day of Managing the Company
Managing of a hotel depends greatly on the ability to communicate with customers as well as your staff, especailly when "exceptional" situations arise. Expect that a negative event (crisis) will happen in this year. The hotel management needs to deal directly, actively and creatively with the event, as well as take timely decisions to resolve it.

> 11.00 - 17.00 Resolve management issues; pricing decisions, adjust team page etc.
> 15.00 Deadline for decisions and explanations in D&E-form for year 03. Read the Explaining secure section and use your secret link. Hand in a printed D&E-form at your coach.
> 17.00 Hand in the solution to the special event at your coach (Task 3; max. 2 pp.).
- Task 8: Friday 8 February (year 04) - Day of Promotion
This day your team will show how to sell its services and make hotel promotions attractive through the use of internet and social media. The competitions finishes today. Final results will be determined and the teams with the most profit and that were the most creative will be awarded.

> 10.00 - 14.00 Team preparation of 3 minutes of fame; pricing decisions, adjust team page etc.
> 12.00 Deadline for decisions and explanations in D&E-form for year 04. Read the Explaining secure section and use your secret link. Hand in a printed D&E-form at your coach.
> 14.30 - 16.00 Presentation of 3 minutes of fame; evaluation of the game
> 16.30 Deadline for team page and the Promotion Proposal. Hand it in at your coach (Task 4; max. 2 pp.)
> 17.00 - 18.00 Final of the Game: Award Ceremony.
C. Steps to be taken after the final of the game
- Task 9: Game Questionnaire
After the Final of the game, we kindly ask you to evaluate the game by filling out this questionnaire (Word-file). When filled out, please print it and hand it over to your coach. Thanks in advance; it helps us in further improving the game!
