Go for the Golden Bell

You have shown that you can manage a hotel. This news has come the attention of the EMEA Area President of a renowned international hotel chain. They are looking for a team that can take over the management of a five-star hotel in a major capital city. The task is ambitious, challenging and very rewarding. You are invited to pitch your team. Now!

Situation

So far, your efforts have been aimed at promoting, managing and developing your hotel. Now, you are now challenged to pitch and give a transparent and convincing picture of the power of your team. What successes can your team claim? You have probably also made some mistakes along the way; as success usually comes at a price. You might have also learned new insights during the process. You got to know your team members, showing their qualities maybe at times you least expected it. You also got to know yourself a bit better. All in all, your team has gained experience thanks to all efforts, interactions, decisions and creations, while running the hotel. Make sure that your pitch do paint a clear picture of these accomplishments, but don’t hesitate to also show where you have learned from failure and how you have faced difficulties along the road.

Goal

Create a sales pitch presentation of your team. Create a video of maximum 5 minutes that touches upon all qualities that you have been able to prove and develop. Also support your pitch with a PowerPoint of maximum 7 slides, that sheds a light on each team member. Make sure that both video and PowerPoint are well understood even by someone who has never met your team before.
When all pitches are handed in (be in time for the deadline!), the five most convincing teams will be nominated for a final round; the Golden Bell event. Your video will be shown in a large plenary online meeting. The audience will consist of your fellow students, the coaches and staff members, and a jury of hospitality professionals. After the video, the jury will enter into a ten-minute dialogue with your team, to find answers to any questions they might still have. After these five pitches, the jury will grant the Golden Bell Award 2020 to the winning team.. And of course, also the complete audience will be asked to vote for their favorite. The most favorite team will win the Audience Award.

Tasks and Final deliverable

Prepare a video and a PowerPoint by making a good, reflective analysis of your team performance. It should be attractive, original, genuine and convincing. Next to that; also prepare yourselves for a dynamic dialogue with the jury, in case you are one of the nominated teams for the Golden Bell. And, remain mindful of IP rights on whatever you create. Assessed elements

  • Does the pitch offer a good insight in the qualities of each individual?
  • Does the pitch offer a good insight in the power of the team?
  • The pitch should be based on convincing reflective reasoning.
  • Is there a creative spark, that draws attention?

Invest in Innovation

As is apparent from the hotel-intel provided to you by Ms. Jandal, the owners under-invested in the property. This may compromise the competitive position of the hotel. In this assignment, you are asked to prepare an investment plan.

Situation

You have been running the hotel for some years now. You are familiar with its qualities, but also with its shortcomings. Where does the hotel need an extra push? What observations or opportunities -both inside and outside your hotel- do you want to act upon? Now is the time to decide on innovation and invest in the future.

Goal

Elevate the hotel to a next level. Improve your organization in such a way that the investment pays off.

Task, deliverable

Investment Proposal, based on an innovation in services, operations, communication, information, sustainability, experiences, products, or in the actual product (the property itself).

Assessed elements

  • Is the need explained, demonstrated?
  • Does the innovation show originality? Does it build on new trends and developments?
  • Are the proposals mutually consistent? Do they meet a real challenge?
  • Substantiation of the amounts (ballpark)
  • Timing and impact on financials

Handing in

Hand in your material by uploading it in the right folder in the Capstone Course in LMS.

  • A description of the observations and opportunities that lead to the innovation to invest.
  • An overview of the nature of the investments your team deems necessary for the next 5 years. In case you are not sure what we mean by this, consider e.g. our core courses at BUas. Is it your first priority to invest in Marketing? Or in hotel staff somehow (OB, Operations Management)? Systems (MIS)? Sustainability (BL&E)? Guest experience? Product innovation?
  • “Ballpark” figures for the amounts of money involved. Don’t go too much in-depth here, nobody expects you to ask companies for quotes for how much it would cost to buy new dustbins 😉 But say you propose to do some kind of upgrade of the guest rooms, we do expect you to give us an indication of how much such an investment would come down to.
  • A timeline of when what investment should be made.
  • The impact on depreciation and hotel profit in the future 5 years.
