Step 3/10: Strategy, what can you do?

In the game you have a number of possibilities to influence your hotel.

  • The Team file which you have a private login link to. In this file you present your strategy and the links to your web site and social media. In this file you also do all your decisions and explanations. You can edit this text file. This is not visible to others
  • Your Team finances, a spreadsheet: only accessible with your private link via your Team file. Any hotel has its own. This is not visible to others. In this file each hotel can follow its:
    • tab 1 dashboard tab where you find an overview of the most important ratio's.
    • tab 2 results tab where your hotel finds its results after each year, only after your coach has made them visible.
  • The social media, websites etc. On the first page of your Team file there should be links to all your social media and your Hotels website.
  • Other live actions of your team: sometimes required, like the Trade Fair but maybe also at your own initiative.

Basic strategy explained in your Team file

The very first thing you have to do is think of a basic strategy and describe this. Therefore it is good to have a look at the history of the hotel. One of the most important things in a strategy is to be consistent and to make things SMART (= specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic and time-related). This consistence and clearness is important to:

  • your customers;
  • your board of directors;
  • and don't forget to your staff;
  • but in fact to all stakeholders!

Your team makes a number of basic strategic choices already on the start of the game.

  1. Your new name, new logo and a slogan
  2. New strategy: basic strategy, choosing target markets and target groups
  3. Your are setting all your goals to be reached; financially as well as other goals.

Please inform yourself well before making these basic choices on your strategy, as changing them afterwards is not easy and can be very costly. Consistency in your strategy and choices is key.

Stick to your strategy: maybe bent it a bit during the game, but do not change it radically. If you would be a "real" hotel you could not change your imago overnight: you will loose all credibility. And why should you? If you make losses, try to cope with this and try to lower your costs, get higher occupancy rates or higher prices. Do not try just turning things around for the sake of having a higher profit. Indeed, it is a competition and you will probably aim for more profit, but your strategy is the most important thing in your evaluation and so in the marks given to you. This heavily influences your occupancy rate and so your results and profit.
